Description: Papers of Jasper Owen Draffin (1884-1960), professor of theoretical and applied mechanics (1923-53), including photographic prints, plates and negatives, manuscripts, publications, correspondence and related documents concerning the history of engineering and the College of Engineering at Illinois.
The series includes a 33-chapter manuscript "History of the Development of Engineering Progress" (ca. 1955) and supporting correspondence concerning facts and photographs; history of engineering lecture notes; typescript of "A Century of American Textbooks in Mechanics and Resistance of Materials" (ca. 1945); photograph negatives and prints (ca. 1000 each) and plates (ca. 100) relating to the historical development of engineering inventions, transportation, industry and the Draffin collection of portraits of engineers, scientists and departmental faculty, staff and students. The series also includes manuscripts of talks, material on memorials and honors awarded Engineering faculty members (1930-45) and photographs of the Engineering faculty, Talbot Laboratory and materials testing research work in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.
