Scope and Contents of the Materials

Labor Management Relations Studies including correspondence, questionnaires, staff memoranda, reports, methodological analyses, graduate theses and papers, newspaper articles and abstracts, public opinion surveys, lists, schedules, recordings, interviews and reinterviews, commentaries, union contracts and industrial reports relating to the Institute's study of labor-management relations in major Decatur industries (1947-50).  The study includes an in-depth analysis of the Mueller and Staley companies and the relationships and rank and file workers cover attitudes toward jobs, co-workers, company, unions and bargaining procedures.  The studies include analyses of labor-management relations in E. St. Louis, Carbondale and Decatur (1955, 1959) and a preliminary study of DeKalb conducted at Northern Illinois University (1959).  These studies resulted in four publications: W. Ellison Chalmers, Margaret K. Chandler, Louis L. McQuitty, Ross Stagner, Donald E. Wray and Milton Derber, Labor-Management Relations in Illini City: vol 1-The Case Studies, (1958), and Labor Management Relations in Illini City: vol. 2 - Explorations in Comparative Analysis, (1954), Derber, Chalmers, Stagner with the co-operation of Milton T. Edelman, The Local Union - Management Relationship, (1960); Derbert Chalmers Edelman with the technical advice of Harry C. Triandis, Plant Union - Management Relations: From Practice to Theory, (1965). Additional files include interviews with Staley Company employees, management, and union representatives; Staley Company policy manuals, annual reports and correspondence; interviews with union dairy, garment and trucking workers; newspaper articles and flyers about trucking companies; interviews with union officials from Decatur Cartage and Hayes Company; research materials, including pamphlets, maps, census reports, occupational wage and industrial surveys, and market inquiries about Peoria, Moline, St. Louis, Central and Southern Illlinois, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Quincy, Rockford and Springfield; and materials relating to the Central Labor Union Conference, 1954.

Biographical Note

Established in 1945,1 the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations is responsible for fostering and coordinating education, extension, and research activities in labor and industrial relations, including advisory research and information services.2 In 1946, the name Institute for Labor Relations was changed to Institute for Labor and Industrial Relations.3 In 2008, the Institute was redesignated the School of Labor and Employment Relations.4 It offers graduate, professional and extension training for labor, management and civic groups.5 The Chicago Labor Education Program was established to help union leaders improve their leadership skills.6
