Conference and committee file, including correspondence, reports, statistical information, recommendations, proposals, minutes of meetings, memoranda, agendas, course outlines, curricular material, newsletters and faculty and staff directories, concerning educational policy, higher education, courses and curricula, university accreditation, summer study, international education, institutional cooperation (CIC), scholarships and fellowships, faculty, research, campus planning and building, student discipline, college committees, vocational education, medical education, junior colleges, admissions and retentions (1945-70).  The series also includes college files relating to the Executive Committee (1964-81); Policy and Development Committee (1967-81); standing committees on academic standards, admissions, equal opportunity and general education (1962-80); committees on academic deans, capricious grading, freshman-sophomore program and museums (1966-81); ad hoc committees on foreign languages, religious studies and salary (1972-80); and the Undergraduate Instruction Committee (1970-75).

The dean's office of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences was formed in 1913, when the College of Literature and the Arts and the College of Science were combined.¹

The primary duties of the dean are that of chief executive officer of the college and agent of the college faculty for the execution of the college educational policy. Among his other duties, the dean calls and presides over faculty meetings, makes faculty appointments and promotions, prepares the budget, and oversees the registration of the students.²

Under the dean are the four schools (Life Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Chemical Sciences) and 75 fields of study which comprise the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.³ This includes the administration of the General Curriculum, which was formerly the Division of General Studies, and is for freshmen and sophomores who have not chosen a field of study yet.⁴
