Scope and Contents of the Materials

Subject file of Dean Theodore Peterson relating to the Benjamin Franklin Magazine Awards, containing applications, announcements of winners, correspondence, advisory council memoranda, invitations, publicity materials, policy statements, photographs and duplicates of actual awards scrolls and citations. Dean Peterson represented the College on the Advisory Council; also represented were the University and the Society of Magazine Writers. Among winners of the awards were editors Gardner Cowles, Henry R. Luce and Howard Allaway; writers John Bartlow Martin, Cornelius Ryan, Joseph and Stewart Alsop and Alan Paton; and magazines Life, Redbook, and Popular Science Monthly.

Biographical Note

With the changing of the status of the School of Journalism and Communications in 1957 to the College of Journalism and Communication, the office of the Dean of the College was formed.1 In 1968, the college changed its name to the College of Communications.2 In 2008, the college changed its name to the College of Media.3

The dean is the chief executive office of the college, responsible to the President for its administration. He is the agent of the college faculty for the execution of the college education policy. Other duties of the dean include calling and presiding over faculty meeting; making appointments, reappointments, or promotions of the faculty; overseeing registration of the students and serving as the medium of communication for official business of the college with campus authorities, students, and the public.4
