Subject File including correspondence and slides (35mm) of research assistants or directors Richard Walker, Marry Lee Bundy, Buy Garrison, Terence Crowley, Lucille Wert and Herbert Goldhor. The Library Research Center received funding from the Illinois State Library to conduct research for improving library services and operations. Besides research for librarians in Illinois, the ERIC was interested in a nationwide projects and foundation grants to accomplish them. Outgoing letters include those to ERIC, state and federal lawmakers, and editors of library journals. Incoming letters are from library school faculties, other groups or individuals concerned with library affairs, especially public libraries personnel and dissertations. Subjects of the file involve funding; research proposals; books-by-mail project; library science; faculty affairs; space utilization; scholarship in library science; evaluation and surveys of public and school libraries; characteristics of librarians; library catalogs and reference work.
Established in 1961 through a grant of Library Services Act funds from the Illinois State Library, the Center was originally designed to conduct studies related to rural public library development.1 The Center broadened its scope to include studies of more general library concern, though it continued to emphasize public library problems.2
