The Revels Players was founded in 1970 by Michael Shapiro and Marvin Vawter, both faculty of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The mission was to create a student, staff, and faculty organization that would produce early classic drama, and more specifically plays of the English Renaissance. Productions occurred each spring and many of the productions were closely coordinated with the course, English 180: Drama in Production. The Revels Players became an officially recognized student organization allowing it to receive financial assistance in production. Performances have occurred in a variety of venues since the inception of the group including, the Depot, the Quad at UIUC, the Armory Free Theater, the YMCA, and the Wesley Foundation.
