Historical Note:

Alexander Scheeline (b. 1952), professor emeritus of chemistry (2012-), was assistant professor (1981-87); associate professor (1987-98); professor (1998-2012); and director of the School of Chemical Sciences Graduate Studies (2005-08) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He has also been associated with the University of Illinois Beckman Institute, serving as associate professor (1990-97) and professor (1998-99). A renowned chemist and educator, he is best known for his contributions to the field of applied spectrometry.

Scheeline was born in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on June 6, 1952. He earned his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University (1974) and his PhD from the University of Wisconsin (1978). He was assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Iowa (1979-81) before joining the faculty at UIUC in 1981. During his career, he taught a number of courses, including Quantitative Analysis, Instrumental Methods in Chemical Analysis, Advanced Analytical Chemistry, and Experimental Spectroscopy. He has published over 120 papers in research areas such as atomic spectroscopy, instrument design, kinetics, sensors, oxidative stress, oscillating reactions, and the dynamics of nonlinear systems. His work has been recognized by the W. F. Meggers Award, Society for Applied Spectroscopy (SAS, 1979 & 1991), the SAS Special Publications Award (1992), American Chemical Society (ACS) Newsmaker Award (2000), and the SAS Distinguished Service Award (2010). Active on campus and in his field at large, Scheeline is also Founder of SpectroClick Inc. (2001), and Founding Partner (2005) and Vice President (2012-) of Anchor Science, LLC.
