Consists of correspondence, biographical material, and personal papers relating to Toshio Tsuzuki's immigration status and potential deportation from the US which ultimately led to a bill sponsored by Congressman Sidney Yates that allowed Toshio to remain in the country, as well as correspondence and personal papers of Toshio's wife, Yoshiko Joy. Includes recommendation letters written to the US government by his professors at the University of Illinois, where he earned his Master's degree in Chemistry; photos from his September 1951 wedding to Yoshiko Joy; Japanese magazines commemorating Emperor Hirohito's ascension to the throne (ca. 1928); Japanese newspapers covering Japan's declaration of war on the United States, the attack at Pearl Harbor, and the invasion of Singapore; a print-out of Emperor Hirohito's Potsdam Declaration acceptance speech in 1945 (in both Japanese and English); a 1990 Courier News article about Yoshiko Joy's experiences and subsequent reader responses; and a 2001 invitation to the Imperial Kikuchikan Awards ceremony. Yoshiko Joy Tsuzuki graduated summa cum laude with a B.A at the University of Illinois in 1955 and Toshio Tsuzuki went on to receive his PhD at Illinois in 1957.
