Ma-Wan-Da Plaque (2) | University of Illinois Archives
Ma-Wan-Da plaque affixed to a tree on campus. Ma-Wan-Da was known as the Honor Senior Society on campus in 1922. Per the 1918 Illio, it was first formed on Campus in 1912, and it first began affixing the plaque to the tree for the class of 1918.
Ma-Wan-Da, often associated with Native American imagery, was a service honors society awarded to "senior women and men who have shown oustanding leadership in the extra-curricular activities of the university". Their tasks included planning and ushering the May commencement ceremony and planning activities to "deepen Senior Friendship" per the 1987 'Guide to honorary societies on campus'.
