Lester Earl Barnes, Jr. was born June 20, 1969, in Enfield, Illinois, to Lester Earl Barnes, Sr. and Esther M. Barnes. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his military service, Barnes completed his undergraduate and master's degrees at Southern Illinois University, and then his doctoral degree in business at the University of Illinois. He spent his career at Northern Illinois University.
