Scope and Contents of the Materials

Consists of marching band field show photographs, march folios, posters, concert programs, and posters, documenting the work of Thomas Caneva during his time as an undergraduate (1976-1981) and as Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Marching Illini (1998-2006) at the University of Illinois.

Biographical Note

Thomas "Tom" Ernest Caneva (1957- ) is a band director and former Associate Director of Bands at the University of Illinois (1998-2006). Caneva was born in Detroit, Michigan to parents Ernest Oreste and Lillian (nee Todorovich) Caneva. His father Ernest was a composer and conductor and his mother was a choral director. Caneva's step brother, Donald Ernest, also became a band director, becoming one of the youngest members of the American Bandmasters Association in 1976. Tomas Caneva grew up in Lockport, Illinois and eventually graduated high school in New Lenox, Illinois. In 1976 he began a degree in music education at the University of Illinois. Prior to graduating in 1981, he served as a member of the drumline on snare drum in the Marching Illini under Gary Smith, in the percussion section in the Symphonic Band under Harry Begian, and was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity.

In 1980, Caneva became the associate director of bands at his alma mater, Lincoln-Way Community High School, in New Lenox, Illinois. He served in this role until 1983. In 1984, he began a degree in conducting at the University of Texas at Austin, where he also served as Assistant to the Director of Bands. After graduating in 1985, he became the Assitant Director of Bands at Auburn University. In 1989 he became the Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Marching Band at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Here he also pursued and earned his DMA in conducting in 1994. In 1998, he accepted the position of Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Marching Illini at the University of Illinois. He was inducted into the American Bandmasters Association in 2001. After resigning in 2006, Caneva became the Director of Bands at Ball State University, where he would serve until his retirement in 2025.
