While attending the University of Illinois, Philip Martin was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and involved with Student Senate and the YMCA, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa honors societies. He additionally published several articles in the Daily Illini. After graduation, Martin studied at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and studied law at Harvard University, then established a career as a lawyer in Chicago beginning in 1968. He maintained connections to the University of Illinois community through involvement with the Alumni Association.
