Scope and Contents of the Materials

Papers of Sidney B. Gaythorpe (1880-1964), amateur historian of astronomy, consisting of correspondence relating to the life, writings and astronomical observations of Jeremiah Horrocks, the history of astronomy and Virgil. Gaythorpe was a member of the British Astronomical Association and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He published papers in the Journal of the British Astronomical Association and the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Correspondents include Stephen Liberty, British vicar and classicist; Sir Frank Dyson, Astronomer Royal (1910-33); J. L. E. Dreyer, astronomer at Cambridge University and Edward B. Knobel, twice President of the Royal Astronomical Society.
