Dr. Sidney E. Glenn (b.1891, d.1952) was an associate professor of English at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana from 1931-1952.
Dr. Glenn was born in Chicago to Archibald Glenn and Margaret Connellia on November 29, 1891. After graduating from St. Ignatius academy in 1909, he briefly worked at the Illinois Central Railroad at Chicago before becoming a student at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana in 1916. His time at U of I was interrupted by two years of military service through World War I, spending the winter of 1918-1919 serving in the Army of Occupation. He was honorably discharged in March of 1919, and returned to university for the following fall semester, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1922 and his PhD in 1931, between which he and Margery Westerman in 1924. Glenn continued to work as an associate professor from 1931-1952 and worked as needed as a writer of articles for encyclopedias (1932, 1947). As a veteran of World War I and of the Reserve Militia during World War II, Glenn spent much of his time and effort working to make higher education more accessible to other veterans.
Glenn’s papers contain memorabilia from his high school and university days, including dance cards, certificates for good behavior, honor society pamphlets and awards, and report cards; professional records from his time teaching at U of I; personal communications which include but are not limited to a transcription of a speech given at a meeting of the Knights of the Templar in Illinois (n.d.), and a 1903 invitation to the Dedication Exercises of St. Patrick’s Church of Urbana; professional papers, including a well-kept collection of his job appointments at U of I throughout his career (1923-1950), and a string of letters between Glenn and DePaul University regarding a faculty position which he ultimately declined in favor of U of I (1932), as well as a copy of his 1931 thesis’ abstract.
