The National Farm-City Council Archives includes meeting minutes; official papers and correspondence; budgets; newspaper articles; a calendar; informational packets, pamphlets, and bookmarks; lesson plans; posters; photographs; CDs; and USBs documenting the activities and efforts of the National Farm-City Council to increase awareness and education about the importance of farms and to connect urban and rural communities through public events between 1987 and 2014.
National Farm-City Week was founded in conjunction with Kiwanis International, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children. Kiwanis International Board served as the coordinating agency for the National Farm-City Committee from 1955-1988. The purpose of this week is to connect the nation's rural and urban people through educating youth and adults about the interdependence of agriculture and industry. This week originated in 1955 during a period of time when farmers faced financial difficulties and a poor public perception. The annual designated National Farm-City Week starts the Friday before Thanksgiving and ends on Thanksgiving Day.
The information that is used in this note is sourced from the Farm City History (1955-2005) brochure, located in the “Bookmarks and Brochures” folder in Box 1.
The National Farm-City Council was formed in 1955 to oversee and develop educational programs for the American public about agriculture, and its significance to the urban world. In coordination with Kiwanis International, they created the National Farm-City Week to facilitate discussion and knowledge about farming between urban and rural Americans.
