Description: Scrapbook of Harold Norton Hungerford (1893-1944), (B.S., Agriculture, 1918). Scrapbook is organized into two sections; the first details Hungerford’s service in the U.S. Army during World War I, and the second chronicles his years at the University of Illinois.
Contents detailing his military service (June 1918 – c. 1919) include administrative material, draft papers, leave passes, letters, photographs, programs, postcards, tickets, and other items. Specific subjects include his transatlantic crossings to and from Europe; items include, among others, meal tickets and sleeping assignments from the USS Plattsburgh and the S.S. Balmoral Castle. Other items of note are programs from entertainment shows and religious he attended and participated in, and several personal photographs that depict military life in World War I.
Items from the University of Illinois include correspondence, dance cards, Farm House Fraternity event programs, general University event programs (Star Course, Glee Club, etc.), photographs, registration forms, and report cards. Of particular note is an extraordinary handwritten poster for an “Ag Club” meeting on Friday, April 16th, 1918, where Hungerford is mentioned as performing a vocal solo.
Some material concerns Yankton College, where Hungerford may have also attended.
