Scope and Contents of the Materials

Consists of appointment calendars, sound recordings, and email files, documenting Stephen Peterson's career as Director of Bands at the University of Illinois (2015-2022), Tempe High School Band, Stephen F. Austin State University, Ithaca College, and Northwestern University as well as his recordings with the North Shore Concert Band. Of particular note is Peterson's correspondence with the College Band Directors National Association.

Biographical Note

Dr. Stephen Peterson was Director of Bands at the University of Illinios from 2015 to 2022. He received his bachelors in music education from Arizona State University. After receiving his bachelor's degree, Peterson taught at Tempe Union High School (1983-1984) and Phoenix Central High School, both in Arizona. Peterson returned to Arizona State University, completing a masters degree in 1984. After receiving his masters degree, Peterson became the associate director of bands at Stephen F. Austin University, a position he held from 1984 until 1988.

Peterson became the first DMA graduate from Northwestern University's wind conducting program in 1991. His dissertation was entitled "A Survey of Concert Programming Techniques Employed by Selected College and University Wind Conductors in the United States." While he was pursuing his DMA and after receiving it, Peterson served as the associate director of bands at Northwestern University from 1988 to 1998, at the same time leading the North Shore Concert Band from 1996 to 1998. In 1998, he became the director of bands at Ithaca college, where he stayed until 2015.

In that year Peterson became the Director of Bands at the University of Illinois. Here, Peterson conducted the Wind Symphony, led the graduate wind conducting program, and taught courses in wind literature. Peterson retired from the University of Illinois in 2022. Outside of his work at the university, Peterson continues to conduct ensembles, holds clinics, and is a member of numerous music education and band associations, including the American Bandmasters Association. He was also a past president of the College Band Directors National Association.
