Series 1: Secular Music Research, 1786-2018

Materials are arranged into six sub-series: Publications, Unpublished Edited Scores, Unpublished Lectures and Liner Notes, Research Files, Photographic Slides and Prints, and Historic Opera Score Collection. Consists of Temperley's publications, research notes, unpublished edited scores, unpublished lectures, and photographs related to his secular music research. Of particular note is his historic collection of scores, libretti, and music catalogs from the 18th- to the 19th-Centuries and his edited scores for Raymond and Agnes, L'Oca del Cairo, Hercules, and The Beggar's Opera.

Sub-Series 1: Publications and Published Scores, 1959-2018

Temperley's publications were originally arranged in chronological order by material type using the following numeric code: I. monographs, II. book chapters, III. articles, IV. reviews of books, V. critical editions and urtexts, VI. published edited and arranged scores, VII. original published music. Each code contains two pieces of information: 1) the material type and shelf on which it was stored and 2) the chronological order of the publication within that type of material. For instance, "II .47" corresponded with Shelf 2 (book chapters), Item number 47.

This numeric code guides the arrangement of this sub-series. Publications on sacred subjects have been moved to Series 2, Sub-Series 1 to more accurately reflect his creative process; the code for that sub-series follows the same original order as this series. Please refer to Box 1, Folder 1 for a full list of Temperley's publications in its original order.

Of particular note are his research files, drafts, and materials related to The Hymn Tune Index.

Sub-Series 1: Publications and Published Scores, 1957-2016

Temperley's publications were originally arranged in chronological order by material type using the following numeric code: I. monographs, II. book chapters, III. articles, IV. reviews of books, V. critical editions and urtexts, VI. published edited and arranged scores, VII. original published music. Each code contains two pieces of information: 1) the material type and shelf on which it was stored and 2) the chronological order of the publication within that type of material. For instance, "II .47" corresponded with Shelf 2 (book chapters), Item number 47.

This numeric code guides the arrangement of this sub-series. Publications on secular subjects have been moved to Series 1, Sub-Series 1 to more accurately reflect his creative process; the code for that sub-series follows the same original order as this series. Please refer to Box 1, Folder 1 for a full list of Temperley's publications in its original order.
