Harvey Albert Hermann (August 26, 1934 - August 4, 2017) was born in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the U.S. Army Band in Japan from 1954-1959. During that time, he held the solo clarinet position in the Far East Headquartes Band for four years and played principal clarinet with the Tokyo ABC and Yokohama Symphony Orchestra. He married Yasue "Jean" Koiwai in 1957, and they had two children, Yuki Hashimoto and Ted Hermann. In 1959, Hermann returned to the University of Illinois to complete his B.S. and M.S. degrees in music education.
Hermann served on the University of Illinois Bands' faculty as the Woodwind Assistant to the Director between 1964 and 1994. During this period he founded the University's Clarinet Choir and was closely involved with Illinois Summer Youth Music. After his first wife died in 1985, he married Sandra Lilly in 1989. Throughout his professional career, Hermann was active as a conductor and a prominent music educator and lecturer for regional, national, and international woodwind conferences. Hermann died in Urbana on August 4, 2017.
