Series 1: Biographical and Personal Materials: contains some of Professor Baer's personal materials including condolences after Baer's death (i.e. printouts of Facebook posts by former students, professors, and colleagues as well as website messages of which we�?� were able to preserve all but one in the Wayback Machine, Internet Archive), as well as a few of his awards. The series is arranged into two groups, personal materials and awards, and alphabetically within each group.
Series 2: Correspondence: includes Professor Baer's professional correspondence with UIUC and Latin American institutions. The series is arranged chronologically.
Series 3: Teaching and Research Materials: contains (1) conference materials, (2) course materials (arranged chronologically) related to international economics, macroeconomics, national income, and fiscal policy, (3) a project report and unpublished manuscripts and related research materials.
Series 4: Publications: This series includes books, articles, and book reviews by Werner Baer in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. If a publication was subsequently translated in another language, it is marked as "TRANSL" and listed after the original publication. The series includes his PhD dissertation. The series is arranged chronologically.

Werner Baer (1931-2016) was a Professor of Economics at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1974-2016) with a focus on Latin America and Brazilian development economics in particular. He worked as assistant professor at Yale University (1961-1965) and associate and full professor of Economics at Vanderbilt University (1965 -1974) before coming to UIUC. He also served as the Jorge Lemann Chair in Economics (2001-2013). Baer published numerous books, book reviews, and articles, including The Brazilian Economy: Its Growth and Development / A Economia Brasileira (1979) and Industrialization and Economic Development in Brazil (1965). Baer participated in academic and professional organizations such as the Ford Foundation (Program Advisor, Rio de Janiero, 1967-1976), the Latin American Studies Association (Treasurer, 1986-1987), and as editor for US and Latin American journals. He received several honors and awards, including the National Order of the Southern Cross from the government of Brazil (1982), the Rio Branco Medal from the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2000), and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Brazilian Studies Association (2010).
