Scope and Contents of the Materials
Papers of Geneva Grosz Belford (1932-2014), Professor Emerita of Computer Science (1977-2000), B.A. 1953, M.S. 1954, Ph.D. 1960, including correspondence, course and advising materials, drafts of manuscripts, reprints, and notes, notebooks, and research data concerning her research in physics, mathematics, chemistry, and computer science relating to data management, performance analysis of computer systems, distributed databases, and sedimentation; her work as an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania and as a computer programmer at the Digital Computer Laboratory at the U of I; her experiences as an instructor; use of ILLIAC in research; and her role as a graduate advisor and mentor. Some materials relate to her joint research with R. Linn Belford.
Biographical Note
Geneva Grosz Belford (1932-2014) was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in Philadelphia. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her PhD from the University of Illinois. Belford's inital research interests were in chemistry and mathematics, however, she later conducted extensive research in computer science. Her tenure at the University of Illinois lasted nearly fifty years, during which time she was a professor of both Mathematics and Computer Science and served as the Associate Dean of the Graduate College. She published extensively both alone and with collaborators, including with her husband, R. Linn Belford.
