Scope and Contents of the Materials

Papers of Thomas Clark Shedd (1890-1959), Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois (1925-1958), concerning his career as a faculty member and his research on hydraulics and bridge and railway design, contain correspondence with colleagues, especially Hardy Cross, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Yale University at the time; a field notebook (1928-1930); oral history interviews with T. C. Shedd and Milton C. Shedd; publications, such as Bulletins of the Engineering Experiment Station and reprints from Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers; a report The Failure of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge (1941), and Manual of Standard Practice for Detailing Reinforced Concrete Structures (1957); a photograph of Hardy Cross; essays and copyright applications; a blueprint of observations of piers over the Illinois River near Henry, Illinois; a list of drawings of "Bridge No. 212" over Arthur Kill, Arlington, N.Y. (1955); and an U of I Architectural Engineering course notebook belonging to Milton C. Shedd, son of T. C. Shedd (1947-1948).
