Papers of Edwin Carter Rae (1911-2002), Professor of Art History (1939-1942, 1947-1979), Chairman of Art History Department (1954-79), Chief of Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives section of the United States Army of Occupation in Bavaria, Germany (1945-47), contain biographical material, personal and professional correspondence, course syllabi, notes, assignments and exams from Harvard University (1930- 1942), Brown University (1938- 39), and the University of Illinois (1939-78), administrative records, Master of Arts preliminary and qualifying exams, photographs, negatives, drawings, moulding drawings, illustrated postcards, 35 millimeter Kodachrome slides, glass plate slides, architectural stone samples, published and unpublished articles, drafts of articles, and research notes, concerning art history and the teaching of art history, medieval ecclesiastical, agricultural, and sepulchral architecture and sculpture of Ireland, Europe, and the Americas, especially St. Patrick's Cathedral (Dublin), travel in Europe and the Americas, Latin American Studies, local politics, and work for the United States military regarding the restitution of artwork confiscated by Nazis in World War II.
