Scope and Contents of the Materials

Records of School District #1 (Albion, Edwards County, Illinois) contains a ledger volume containing detailed board minutes (1859-60), accounts of finances includes lists of tuition, monies paid out by treasurer, and a record of teachers who taught at school.

Collection Historical Note

On 15 February 1855, Illinois legislature set up an elaborate education organization under the direction of a Superintendent of Public Instruction located in Springfield, Illinois. A building was built in 1867 and the the first tax supported school in Edwards County District 1.  (From A History of Edwards County Vol. One which was published by Edwards Historical Society, Albion Illinois 62806)
