Caption with photo reads, "Carl Woese, 55, professor of microbiology at the University of Illinois, is one of 22 new fellows named 2/14 by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in a program that provides funding for "exceptionally talented individuals" for five years. Woese is first U of I faculty member to win the award since it was started in 1981. He will get grant of $264,000 over five year period. His research is on evolution of the cell and the archaebacteria, existence of a third form of life. Photo was taken 1/12/83 and is out of files".
