Hobo Parade Bearded Folks | University of Illinois Archives

Title:
Hobo Parade Bearded Folks
Date:
October 1928
Description:

Students walk through campus town Champaign during the Hobo Parade showcase to the community. The Hobo Parade was an annual event where people dressed up on costumes and attire resembling that of hobos. However, on campus, this expanded to different outfits and disguises meant to satirize elements of the Champaign Urbana community. Featured here are men sporting fake beards, baseball outfits, and some even dressed as women. While a lot of context for the jokes is lost, their attempts at satire are not lost. This image is a still from the Bernard Strauch collection of Hobo Parade Imagery.
