Emergency crews operate on the tracks following the April 19th wreck of Illinois Centrals City of Miami streamliner. After a failed track transfer occurred due to a faulty installation of two electrical relays, the 7-car diesel powered train derailed 125 miles south of Chicago, Illinois.
This image features emergency medical crews, emergency track maintenance employees, and investigators on scene. Of the 220 passengers, 197 were injured, 99 required hospitalization, and 2 men died. Charles H. Redus, the conductor, and Charles N. Wood, the Bagman, were both killed in the wreckage.
Featured in select images in the series are the investigation crews totaling up over $110,000 in damages had occurred as a result of the lead cars explosion.
