Horatio Fitch sets a world record of 47.8 seconds during a semifinal heat for the 400m at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. Fitch won the silver medal for the United States in the final event, with gold medalist Eric Liddell of Great Britain setting a new record time of 47.6 seconds.
