In 1984, the Board of Trustees approved the establishment of the Biotechnology Center on the recommendation of the Graduate College. The purpose of the Center was to organize the efforts of faculty with research interests in molecular biology and its applications to problems in plant and animal sciences. Appointments to the faculty steering committee are made by the Dean of the Graduate College, with the faculty members retaining their appointments within existing departments.1
In 1986 the Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Sasaki Associates for a south-campus master planning study, following the appropriation of planning funds for the Biotechnology Center by the federal government.2
