Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Daily Illini, the campus student newspaper, including national, local and campus news and sports; reviews of speeches, concerts and debates; Associated Press news and features; feature articles on campus events and opinions; student editorials and national political columnists. The Illini was first published as monthly, beginning January 1874, as volume III, No. 1, a successor to The Student. In September 1880, it became a semi-monthly; in September 1892, a weekly; in September 1899, a tri-weekly; in September 1902, a daily (Monday-Friday). In September 1904, a Sunday Illini replaced the Monday issue. Beginning in September 1905, it was published 6 days (excepting Mondays). After January 1942, it was issued daily except Monday or Tuesday. Since September 1947, the Daily Illini has been published 5 days a week (excepting Sunday and Monday). Since 1963, a Saturday supplement, "Spectrum," is included. In 1985, the paper began to be published 5 days a week, Monday through Friday. The series also includes unbound single issues of the Illini for 1874-78, 1980-89 and 1892-99.

Biographical Note

In 1911, the Board of Control of the Illini received a state charter of incorporation as the Illini Publishing Company.1 The original charter provided for a non-profit, quasi-official organization authorized to publish the Illini.2 In 1920, the charter was amended to provide for the publishing of other newspapers and magazines.3

In addition to the Daily Illini, the company has subsequently had administrative responsibility for publishing the Siren (1911-34, 1936-39), the Illio (1895- ), the Technograph (1885- ), the Enterpriser (1920-30), the Illinois Agriculturalist (1897-1950), the Illini Rural Observer (1950-54), Chaff (1957-62), Spectator (May-September 1961), Tom-Tom (1945-46) and Shaft (1947-54).
