Annual reports of Dean of Men and Students Fred H. Turner to the President; biennial reports to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction (1934-1958); working papers of Edward E. Stafford (1943-1966), Maria Leonard (1943-1945), Miriam Sheldon (1947-1966), Carl W. Knox (1959-1966), Gerald W. Peck and Virgil J. Hampton (1941-1966), Irene D. Pierson (1944-1962), S. Earl Thompson (1944-1950), and Vern L. Kretschmer (1953-1960) of the Champaign-Urbana campus E. A. Wolleson and Warren O. Brown of the Chicago Undergraduate Division (1947-1957), Maurice Galbraith of the professional colleges (1947-1957), R. S. Holty of the Placement Office and Illini Center in Chicago (1955-1966), and other university committees, boards, divisions, and organizations involved in student activities and affairs. The reports and working papers discuss activities of the deans of men, women, and students and their assistants, especially those relating to veterans, foreign students, student organizations, student employment, placement, housing, Illini Union student activities, campus security, Health Service, Freshmen Week Committee, Senate Committee on Student Affairs, the Board of Panhellenic Affairs, the Assembly Hall, the Illini Union, the Co-ordinating Placement Council, Illini Publishing Company, Illini Theater Guild and WILL Radio Station. The series includes Annual Reports issued by the Dean of Students, Office of Student Personnel, Office of Student Services, Educational Opportunities Program, Expanded Encounter with Learning and Student Programs and Services.

<p class='main'>In September of 1943, the Office of the Dean of Students was created, with the Dean being directly responsible to the President of the University.<a href='#ftn1'>¹</a> The Dean acted as the "unifying and coordinating officer in charge of all agencies interested in the student's physical well-being, both in living quarters and personally in social and recreational activities, and in the cultural level of all phases of student life outside the classroom."<a href='#ftn2'>²</a></p>

<p class='main'>The Dean of Students unified several independent offices that were concerned with the student welfare on the Urbana-Champaign campus. These offices included: the Dean of Men; the Dean of Women; the University Health Service; McKinley Hospital; hospitalization and medical care for students and the Division of Student Housing.<a href='#ftn3'>³</a></p>

<p class='main'>The Dean acted as advisor and coordinator for all boards administering extracurricular activities, except the Athletic Association, Alumni Association and University of Illinois Foundation.<a href='#ftn4'>⁴</a> The Dean supervised social, educational and cultural programs offered by the Illini Union and residence halls. The Dean was the administrative officer for the Senate Committee on Student Affairs and served in an advisory capacity to the Senate Committee and Sub-Committee on Student Discipline.<a href='#ftn5'>⁵</a></p>

<p class='main'>In September, 1967, the Office of the Dean of Students was reorganized. The Dean of Men became the Dean of Student Programs and Services. The Dean of Women became the Dean of Personnel and the Dean of Women.<a href='#ftn6'>⁶</a> On October 18, 1972, the Board of Trustees combined the positions of Vice Chancellor for Campus Affairs and the Dean of Students.<a href='#ftn7'>⁷</a></p>
