Administrative History of Creating Unit
Established in 1965, the Center for Human Ecology was a separate unit of the Graduate College. The broad aim of the center is to develop and coordinate activities relating to human environmental studies into an all-university program of education, research and counsel concerning the human ecosystem.1 An example of the said activity will be the research done to provide professional services for a hail suppression experiment in Illinois.2 On November 1, 1972, the Institute for Environmental Studies was established at the university. The Institute is composed of task forces--the Water Resources Center, the Center for Human Ecology and an Administrative Office.3 Thus, the Center for Human Ecology was incorporated into the Institute for Environmental Studies. Specifically, the Center now administers two interdisciplinary courses in human ecology and provide information about courses related to the environment and counseling on career opportunities in environmental management.4 The broader aims are then being tackled by the Institute. In August 1976, the Institute's administrative offices moved from 911 West High Street, Urbana to 408 S. Goodwin Avenue, Urbana.5
