Scope and Contents of the Materials

Papers relating to Society of American Archivists annual meetings (1976-2000), education (1968-86), ethics (1978-98), national information systems (1977-83), programs (1977-79), National Archives (1977-86) and publications (1975-84) and archives of science and technology (1967-93).

The series also includes consulting files relating to the University of Alberta (1982-84), Billy Graham Center (1967-84), R. B. Hayes Presidential Center (1986-87), U.S. Jaycees Foundation (1978), Mathematical Association of America (1980-83), Rockefeller Achives (1980-81), Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center (1980-81, 1990-91), Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board (1998-99).

The series also includes files relating to graduate instruction in archival science in the Graduate School of Library & Information Science (1967-99), notes on academic work at the University of Michigan Law School (1948-49) and University of Wisconsin History Department (1950-54), and records management work in Illinois (1957-61) and Wisconsin (1961-63).

Biographical Note

Maynard Brichford was born August 6, 1926 in Madison, Ohio. He received a B.A. degree from Hiram College and an M.S. (American History) degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1951. During WWII, Brichford served in the U.S. Navy. From 1953-1956, Brichford worked as an assistant archivist for the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. From 1956-1959, he was a methods and procedures analyst at the Illinios State Archives. In 1959, Brichford returned to Wisconsin to serve as the records management supervisor for the Wisconsin Department of Administration. From 1963 until his retirement in 1995, Brichford served as the head archivist for the University of Illinois. He was elected to the Society for American Archivists Council for a term from 1965-1969, was elected as a Fellow in 1970, was elected Vice President in 1978, and served as president of the organization from 1979-1980. In June of 2017, he was awarded the Chancellor's Medal for his lifetime of research on Illinois History and his work with the University of Illinois Archives.

Acquisition Source: Maynard Brichford

Acquisition Method: The acquisition date of February 11, 2005 is based on date of completion of a finding aid for Boxes A-1 to A-5, C-1 to C-4, M-1 to M-3, S-1 to S-2, and T-1 to T-4.  The alphanumeric rubric for the boxes dates from many years earlier (at least to prior than 1977) when Brichford had stored boxes of his personal papers Library Room 21, on the tops of UAS 22-6 to 22-8.
