Scope and Contents of the Materials

Papers of Folke Dovring (1916-1998), professor of land economics (1960-1987), Department of Agricultural Economics, including (1) biographical and personal documents (obituaries, vitae, list of publications, material relating to Dovring's education in Sweden, and correspondence), (2) professional correspondence relating to Dovring's academic career in Sweden (1947-1953), his work with Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (1954-1960), and his work in the Department of Agricultural Economics; consulting work with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and other organizations; participation on the North Central Land Economics Research committee; his tenure on the editorial board of the Journal of Economic History; and his relations with editors and publishers, (3) publications and manuscripts, and (4) a large body of material relating to his work on community and political issues such as the U.S. economy, energy resources, agricultural issues, foreign investment in real estate, greyhound racing in Illinois, and parking/transportation.

Dovring's research concerned agricultural history, legal history, labor history (especially agricultural labor issues), historiography, land economics, land tenure and reform, land use, Soviet agriculture, Mexican agriculture, Indian agriculture, political economy (including the theories of V. I. Lenin), soybeans, the world food crisis, and energy resources (especially biomass).

The series includes information on the Swedish system of higher education, the workings of intergovernmental agencies, editorial peer review and academic publishing, and the relationship between academic research and public policy.
