Biographical Note

Haldane "Hal" Wesley Bean (1901-1977) was a professor in the College of Agriculture and Assistant Director for the University Cooperative Extension Service. Bean graduated from Blue Mound High School in 1917, where he performed in the bands on tenor saxophone. He received his bachelors degree in agriculture from the University of Illinois in 1922. While he was a student, Bean was involved in the ROTC program, the Hoof and Horn Club, the Glee Club, and the Hobo Band. In 1924 he married Agnes Cutler, with whom he had three daughters, Marjorie, Kathryn, and Norma. In the 1920s, he became the superintendent of Blue Mound High School in Blue Mound, Illinois. He completed his masters degree in agriculture in 1932 and joined the faculty of the University of Illinois in 1938. He served as a professor of agriculture until 1969, when he retired from the university. Between 1942 and 1950, he served as the Assistant to the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Extension Service. From 1950 to 1969, he served as Assistant Dean of Agricture and Assistant Director of the Extension Service. Bean died in Urbana in 1977.
