Papers of Theodore L. Brown (1928- ), Professor of Chemistry (1958-93), Vice-Chancellor for Research and Dean, Graduate College (1980-86), and Director, Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology (1987-93), including correspondence, reprints, clippings, proposals, reports, photos, notes, and textbooks concerning the Beckman Institute, chemistry, the Department of Chemistry, School of Chemical Sciences, School of Life Sciences (SOLS), and SOLS Review Committee.
This series also includes Brown's history of the Beckman Institute, Bridging Divides and correspondence concerning the creation of the Institute, biographical material on the Beckmans, press clippings, photographs, pamphlets, and greeting cards relating to important ceremonies at and about the Institute.
Theodore "Ted" L. Brown (1928- ) is professor emeritus of chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois. Brown received his PhD in 1956 from University of Michigan. Shortly after receiving his degree, he became a faculty member at Illinois. He served as Vice Chancellor and then Dean of the Graduate College between 1980 and 1987. In 1987, he became the first director of the Arnold O. and Mabel Beckman Institute. Brown was instrumental in the formation of the interdisciplinary institute and served as the director until 1993. In 1994, he retired from the Beckman Institute and became emeritus.
Brown's research interests lie in the philosophy and social impact of scientific enterprise and thought. He is the author of Making Truth: The Metaphor in Science and Bridging Divides, both published by the University of Illinois Press.
