Biographical Note

The Council on Teacher Education was established in 1944 to coordinate the administration of teacher education.1 The Council is composed of the deans of the six colleges which offer teacher preparation curricula: the Colleges of Agriculture, Applied Life Studies, Education, Fine and Applied Arts, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Graduate College.2 As of November, 1969, three undergraduate students and one graduate student served as non-voting members of the Council.3 The main working body of the Council since 1973 is the Executive Sub-Committee which reviews curriculum and course proposals and presents policy matters to the Council.4 The duties of the Council include the formulation of policies and programs in the areas of teacher selection, preparation and placement.5 It also acts as the liaison between the university and the state certification authorities.6 In addition, the Council reviews academic progress of students, invites eligible students to apply for student teaching positions, and provides counseling services aimed at teacher effectiveness.7 The Council offices are located in 140 Education Building.8 The Council has been known variously as the University Council on Teacher Education and the Urbana Council on Teacher Education. It was preceeded by the Coble Committee.9
