Scope and Contents of the Materials

Papers of Bruce Hannon (1934- ), professor of Geography and Bioengineering (1974- ), and formerly assistant professor, Department of General Engineering and Center for Advanced Computation (1971-74), including correspondence of the Study Group on Abbott Power Plant; correspondence and studies about coal scrubbers for electric power plants; correspondence, newsclippings, and publications related to Allerton Park and Oakley Dam controversy, and correspondence between environmental groups, university officials, and the State of Illinois and environmental impact statements regarding coal scrubbers for the Abbott Power Plant; undergraduate honors class study, done under the direction of Bruce Hannon and Erik Jakobsson, describing a "hypothetical sustainable society" for Champaign County, including descriptions of natural resources, agricultural and industrial development, and demographics. The series includes files on the University's incinerator for steam generation project and opposition by environmental groups (1983-88). Also included are photographs (ca. 1848, 1880-1994) of the Hannon, Phalen, and O'Brien families of Ivesdale, Illinois; Hannon family scrapbooks, clippings, account books, notebooks, abstracts of titles, and deeds (1893-1990) documenting rural life in and around Ivesdale, Illinois; and correspondence from family and friends. Included are photographs of Chanute Field (1941), a Wabash railroad train derailment (October 6, 1940), and Bruce Hannon's work with clocks (1988), clippings (1966) concerning the Hannon family's 1865-1965 involvement in the grain business in Ivesdale.
