Scope and Contents of the Materials

Chicago Labor Education Program File including incoming, outgoing, and interoffice and external correspondence, primarily with unions and educational institutions (1966-98), project reports and proposals (1968-81), program files (1968-99), and course and conference materials (1973-95) of the Chicago Labor Education Program operated by Stanley Rosen, William J. Adelman and Helen Elkiss at the Chicago Circle Campus, concerning speakers, finances, books, films, advisory committee, training for union officers, labor history, unionism, urban problems, collective bargaining, labor law, speech, boycotts, racism, transportation, blacks, Jews, and women in the labor movement, politics, national elections, and the use of computers in unionism. Significant correspondents include Helen Elkiss, Stanley Rosen, and William J. Adelman.

Biographical Note

Established in 1945,1 the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations is responsible for fostering and coordinating education, extension, and research activities in labor and industrial relations, including advisory research and information services.2 In 1946, the name Institute for Labor Relations was changed to Institute for Labor and Industrial Relations.3 In 2008, the Institute was redesignated the School of Labor and Employment Relations.4 It offers graduate, professional and extension training for labor, management and civic groups.5 The Chicago Labor Education Program was established to help union leaders improve their leadership skills.6
