Academic Board of the US Army School of Aeronautics | University of Illinois Archives
Several US Army School of Military Aeronautics instructors stand on the steps of Altgeld Hall.
The Caption on the opposite page reads, "The Academic Board was regarded as made up of all instructors of all subjects except those strictly military in character as military drill. In general the Academic Board consisted of all members of the staff except the officers on the staff of the Commandant.
"This picture was taken in the early fall of 1917 when the enrollment of the school was approximately 350 cadets. At the time this picture was taken all members of the teaching staff wore the uniform of the soldier without rank except the few who had at the time been granted the rack of captain in the Illinois National Guard."
