Historical Note: Frederic Cople Jaher (1934-2014) became an associate professor of history at the University of Illinois in 1968, full professor in 1978, and retired as professor emeritus in 2005. Jaher was born on March 17, 1934 in Beverley, Massachusetts to Henrietta (Fox) and Sydney Jaher. He received his bachelor's degree from City College of New York (1955) and his master's (1957) and Ph.D. (1961) from Harvard University. Jaher worked as an instructor of history at City College of New York (1961-1964) and as an assistant professor at Long Island University (1964-1965) and the University of Chicago (1965-1968) before starting as associate professor at the University of Illinois. Jaher published books and articles on anti-Semitism, urban upper-class, and Jewish history among other topics, including the works: A Scapegoat in the New Wilderness: The Origins and Rise of Anti-Semitism in America (1994) and The Urban Establishment: The Upper Strata in Boston, New York, Charleston, Chicago, and Los Angeles (1982). Frederic Jaher died on October 20^th, 2014.
