The series includes promptbooks (1942-77), playbills (1947-88), publications (1938, 1948-87), reviews (1958-76), and research notes and copies relating to his work on William Macready, Edwin Booth, Bertolt Brecht (1949-76), American stage history (1974-88), and Shakespeare promptbooks (1960-66). Correspondents include Kerker Quinn, James F. Powers (1942-77), and Eudora Welty (1942-79).
Charles Harlan Shattuck (1910-1992) received his B.A. (1932), M.A. (1934), and Ph.D (1938) from the University of Illinois, and served as a member of UIUC's English Department faculty from 1934 until his retirement in 1979. An internationally known expert in theater history, particularly the staging of Shakespeare's plays, he published widely on various related topics, winning the George Freedley Memorial Award in 1969 for his book "The Hamlet of Edwin Booth," and again in 1987 for the second volume of his "Shakespeare on the American Stage" (for which he also received the Barnard Hewitt Award for outstanding research in theater history). Dr. Shattuck co-founded and served as the co-editor of the magazine "Accent: A Quarterly of New Literature" from 1940 to 1960, directed many University Theatre productions, and served as the president of the Shakespeare Association of America in 1979-80. Other achievements include two Guggenheim Fellowships (1961 and 1968), four Folger Library Fellowships (1959, 1961, 1974, and 1978), and two UIUC Center for Advanced Study Fellowships (1961 and 1966). Following his retirement from UIUC, Dr. Shattuck served as Visiting Professor of English at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
