Repository: University of Illinois Archives
Accruals: ca. September 1992; 4/21/2005
Processing Information: Note: On accession, correspondence was stored in letter-filing boxes, with alphabetical divider tabs, “A,” “B,” “C,” etc. separating loose documents. During processing the correspondence was transferred in its original order into file folders similarly headed, and then separate folders for individual family names were created where the correspondence or correspondent was particularly significant or where there were multiple letters from the same family name. The bulk of the correspondence is hand-written, often on thin tissue, and in Polish, and most of the letters contain no inside address but often barely legible signatures. The top margin of first letter in a sequence of letters from the same or apparently related signatories is often marked in either pen or pencil with what seems to be Felicia Turyn’s hand noting the name of the correspondent. Unfortunately, even this handwriting is not always clear. Therefore, the identification and spelling of the names of the correspondents identified below is only the best approximation of the individuals. Annotations describing the content of some of the more significant letters was added in 2009 as part of a broader re-processing and translation project. Any further clarifications and corrections are welcomed by the University Archives staff. Regrettably, there is only incoming correspondence.
