Scope and Contents of the Materials

Papers of David Kinley (1861-1944), President of the University (1920-30), including correspondence with newspapermen, businessmen and legislators about University appropriations (1910-11); Illinois governors Charles Deneen, Edward Dunne and Frank Lowden about research reports on legislative bills which Kinley collected or prepared (1906-19); Kinley's role as a delegate to the 4th Pan American Conference (1910-15); with officials and authors concerning publications of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace relating to World War I and Latin America (1913-20) and with Richard t. Ely, Irving Fisher and other economists, businessmen, politicians and family members (1906-19, 1930-44). The series includes materials for articles and speeches about economics, education and public policy (1892-1943), manuscripts for books on money, university education and administration, a text on economics, working drafts of his autobiography, and books from his personal library. Photographs include pictures of family members and snapshots taken on trips to New Mexico, California, North Carolina, China, and the 4th Pan American Conference (Washington D.C., Chile and Argentina). Four scrapbooks are included; three contain newspaper clippings about Kinley, correspondence and programs (1891-1944) including programs of early talks on Social Reform 91891) and Socialism (1893); a fourth scrapbook contains photographs, obituaries, mementoes and letters of sympathy relating to Mrs. Kate Neal Kinley (1871-1931).
