Papers of Jeffrey O'Connell (1928- ), professor of law (1964-80), including traffic safety files containing newspaper and magazine clippings, pamphlets, proposed legislation and correspondence relating to automobile, driver and highway safety and Basic Protection No Fault Files combining newspaper and magazine clippings, insurance publications, congressional hearings testimony and speech reprints relating to "no-fault" insurance. The series includes letters from automobile manufacturers on advertising (May 1967) in the Traffic Safety Files and copies of The Injury Industry and the Remedy of No-Fault Insurance (Illinois, Urbana, 1971), unbound quartos for Ending Insult to Injury (Illinois, Urbana, 1974), and sources and manuscripts for Safety Last (published 1966) which contain materials concerned with car design and safety, accident analysis, driver education, insurance, court cases, including articles, newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, car advertising, correspondence pertaining to the book and reviews of the book. The series also contains correspondence (1966-73, 1975) with law faculty, students, legislators, federal and state officials, law review editors, insurance companies, consumer advocates and organizations regarding proposed "no-fault" liability laws and lobbying efforts, publications, speaking engagements and student recommendations. Correspondents include Ralph Nader, Daniel P. Moynihan, Robert E. Keeton (1965-73, 1975), Arthur Meyers (1965-67), Edmund S. Muskie (1971-72), Thomas O'Connell (1973, 1975) and Geoffrey Palmer (1973). This series includes correspondence during sabbaticals at Oxford and Michigan and files on Consumer Union affairs. Also includes No-Fault Compensation Systems: Past, Present and Future, 1974.
