YMCA Freshman Mixer (2) | University of Illinois Archives
Freshmen students, dubbed frosh by the photographer, are featured dancing at the annual spring dance. The first year of the University Dance Council was 1939 and this was the third, and final, dance of that school year. The 1939 Illio notes that this dance was held in the university ice skating rink and replaced the interfraternity carnival dance that year. University dances were put on as a depression-era effort to raise morale and raise money for future university sponsored events. Prior dances had been held by the interfraternity council, but this was the first year of the university dance council to plan a frosh mixer.
