Scope and Contents of the Materials

Consists of visitor logs, bills, computer files, and correspondence, documenting the activities of the University of Illinois Renaissance Archives from 1968 to 2006, including its NEH grant application process, the Census-Catalogue of Manuscript Sources of Polyphonic Music project, and researcher visits. The Archive's collection of microfilmed manuscripts, books of polyphony, and anthologies are not included in these records, they can be found in the Music and Performing Arts Library Special Collections.

Collection Historical Note

The University of Illinois Musicological Archives for Renaissance Manuscript Studies (MARMS) was established in 1968 by the board of trustees as a unit of the School of Music. Co-founded by Charles Hamm and Herbert Kellman, the archives were developed to further interest into music of the Renaissance (1400-1600), making research on both original manuscript and printed sources of that music more accessible to scholars. The project was led by Hamm until 1975. Following Hamm's departure from the University, Kellman took over as director. However, many other scholars were involved in contributing manuscripts and their knowledge to the project, including Tom Ward (UIUC), Margaret Bent (Princeton), David Crawford (University of Michigan), Andrew Hughes (University of Toronto), Lewis Lockwood (Harvard), Leeman Perkins (Columbia University), Joshua Rifkin (Brandeis University), and Robert Snow (University of Texas). The day-to-day operations of the project were managed by graduate assistant and research archivist, Jerry Call. After Call graduated in 1992, the Archives were managed by graduate students Tim Barnes and Sarah Long.

Since 1968, MARMS has consisted of an expanding collection of microfilm duplicates of primary sources from around Europe, including microfilm copies of nearly 1,600 manuscripts dating from 1400 to 1550, books of polyphony dating from 1550-1600, many printed anthologies from 1500-1600, and an index to the collected microfilms. MARMS is currently accessible through the University of Illinois Music and Performing Arts Library Special Collections. One of the largest projects MARMS undertook was the Census-Catalogue of Manuscript Sources of Polyphonic Music, 1400-1550, which was produced in 5 volumes and edited by Herbert Kellman between 1979 and 1988. This work was supported by a decade-long grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Biographical Note

Herbert Kellman (1930- ) is professor emeritus of musicology, specializing in Renaissance music. Kellman received a diploma in composition from New York College of Music (1950); a bachelors of arts degree, magna cum laude, from the City University of New York (1957); and a masters of fine arts degree in musicology from Princeton University (1959). From 1961 to 1962, Kellman was a Charlotte Elizabeth Procter Fellow at Princeton. Prior to coming to the University of Illinois Kellman taught at the City College of New York (1962-1963) and the State University of New York, Buffalo (1963-1966).

In 1966 Kellman joined the University of Illinois, where he founded the Renaissance Archives alongside Charles Hamm. Three years later, he became an associate professor. Following Hamm's departure from the University, Kellman edited a five-volume catalogue of the Renaissance Archives called Census-Catalog of Manuscript Sources of Polyphonic Music, 1400-1550, which was released between 1979 and 1988. Kellman is also the editor of facsimilie editions of two manuscripts of polyphony, London, British Library, Royal 8 G VII and Vatican Library, Chigiana C VIII 234; The Treasury of Petrus Alamire: Music and Art in Flemish Court Manuscripts, 1500-1535; and Sources of the Music of Josquin des Prez.

Kellman has received fellowships and grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Edowment for the Humanitites, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He is also a member of the International Editorial Board of the New Josquin Edition and the series editor of Renaissance Manuscript Studies with the American Institute of Musicology. Following his retirement in 2000, a festschrift entitled, Essays on Music and Culture in Honor of Herbert Kellman, was produced and edited by Barabra Haggh.

Consists of bills, microfilm orders, administrative records, NEH Grant applications, visitor logs, and digital records, documenting the Musicological Archives for Renaissance Manuscript Studies' (MARMS) application for NEH funding and its documentation of the management of funds. Of note are drafts of the co-edited Census-Catalog of Manuscript Sources of Polyphonic Music, 1400-1550. This includes both digital working documents on floppy disk as well as annotated paper copies of drafts. In addition, this series contains Herbert Kellman's digital drafts and research on the composer Josquin. Materials are arranged alphabetically by subject. Floppy disk boxes are arranged alphabetically by subject within each box.

Consists of Correspondence with researchers, School of Music Administration, Students, and Libraries regarding the contents of the Archive, procuring additional microfilm sources from libraries around the world, securing and mentoring graduate student work, and scheduling research visits.
