Scope and Contents of the Materials

Consists of Stagg's University of Oklahoma student coursework; original research conducted as a graduate student at the Yale Divinity School and the University of Illinois; local music materials collected as a graduate student and community member; conferred degrees; and a recording of her senior year organ recital. The collection also consists of WILL Radio Station administrative records produced or compiled by Stagg, including correspondence, staff directories, salary information, radio show scripts, original interviews, promotional materials, artist and subject files, and a record card catalog with research notes.

Biographical Note

Nancy Sue Stagg (1937- ) was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma on June 15, 1937. Stagg is an organist and scholar of musicology. She received her bachelor’s degree in organ performance at the University of Oklahoma in 1959, and she earned her Bachelor of Divinity in religion and higher education from Yale Divinity School in 1962. Her Bachelor of Divinity was later changed to a Master of Divinity in 1971 by Yale School of Divinity. Stagg earned her Master of Music in musicology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1972. Her thesis was entitled "Cyclic Coherence in Selected Song-Cycles of Robert Schumann." She began coursework for a doctorate degree in musicology at UIUC, but never finished. Stagg remained in Urbana-Champaign and worked various jobs until her retirement. She served as a program assistant and organist at the McKinley Presbyterian Church (1962-1976), and she was a graduate teaching assistant at the School of Music (1969-1972). She served at WILL Radio Station in many capacities including as a broadcast assistant, announcer, producer, program coordinator, music librarian, and music director (1973-1994). Stagg preserved her coursework as a student and her administrative records from WILL Radio. Her papers also reflect her interests in social justice movements, graduate student rights, and gardening.

Series 1: Personal Papers, 1946-2000
Consists of Stagg's personal papers seperated into three subseries pertaining to her early life and studies at the University of Oklahoma, her work at Yale Divinity School, and her life and studies at Champaign-Urbana that does not relate to her work at WILL. Materials under Early Life and University of Oklahoma consists of class notebooks, coursework, and a sound recording of her senior recital. Materials under Yale Divinity School include her Bachelor of Divinity degree, coursework, and papers related to anti-segregation movements at that time. Materials under University of Illinois and Champaign-Urbana include her master's thesis, the accompanying research, concert and recital programs that she attended, and documents about her involvement with the McKinley Foundation on campus as both a student and non-student.
