Records of the Woman Against Racism (WAR), a group of University of Illinois and Parkland College faculty, staff, and graduate students that was active from approximately 1997 to 2001. Subjects covered in the collection include advertising, bylaws, correspondence (internal and external), editorials, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, photographs, and press releases.
A significant portion of the content relates to the former University of Illinois mascot/symbol "Chief Illiniwek," and the efforts of the Women Against Racism to work to remove and replace it as a representation of the University. This includes a 1999 contest - "A New Mascot for a New Millennium" - sponsored by the group, as well as work to promote the winner of that event - the "Illinois Prairie Fire."
