Series 1: Architectural Projects and Course Materials, 1953-2005: This series contains correspondence and documentation related to John Replinger's construction and remodeling projects. Included also are course materials from ARCH 466 Seminar: Slichter Case Study. This series is arranged alphabetically (usually by owner and address).

Series 2: Architectural Plans and Project Materials, circa 1956-2005: This series contains Replinger's architectural plans and drawings in addition to correlating project materials, including specifications, correspondence, bids, proposals, and research. It is arranged alphabetically by the client's name (or by project name where this does not apply) and lists the project address and date range whenever possible.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

John Gordon Replinger (1923-2006) was a Professor of Architecture at the University of Illinois from 1953 until 1985 and awarded emeritus status upon retirement. Professor Replinger was an outstanding educator and recipient of many university teaching awards. He was widely recognized for his architectural practice, having designed more than forty houses over the course of his career.

John Replinger's papers include correspondence and documentation related to his construction and remodeling projects, as well as site plans, building plans, sketches, and course materials.

This collection is arranged into two series: Series 1: Architectural Projects and Course Materials, 1953-2005, arranged alphabetically (usually by owner and address); Series 2: Architectural Plans and Project Materials, circa 1956-2005, arranged alphabetically.

Biographical Note

John Gordon Replinger (1923-2006) was a Professor of Architecture at the University of Illinois from 1953 until 1985 and awarded emeritus status upon retirement. Professor Replinger was an outstanding educator and recipient of many university teaching awards. He was widely recognized for his architectural practice, having designed more than forty houses over the course of his career.

John Replinger was born on November 9, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, to Roy Lodawick and Dorothy Caroline (Thornstrom) Replinger. Replinger graduated with highest honors from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture in 1949, and subsequently earned a Master of Science degree in Architecture from the University of Illinois in 1952. After spending two years as Instructor at the University of Illinois (1951-1952), John Replinger joined the School of Architecture as Assistant Professor in 1953. He was an Associate Professor at the School of Architecture from 1957 until 1961, and a Professor from 1961 until his retirement in 1985. Replinger also served as a Professor of Housing Research and Development at the University of Illinois from 1972 until 1985.

Concurrent with his career as an educator, John Replinger maintained a private architectural practice. He designed over forty houses, mainly in Champaign-Urbana and rural Illinois, but also in Michigan, California, and Florida. Replinger also designed many residential additions and remodelings for clients. John Replinger served as a first lieutenant in the 8th Air Force during World War II. Replinger piloted a B-17 aircraft and carried out twenty-eight missions over Germany, receiving a medal for his service. Over the course of eighteen years, John Replinger and his wife Dorothy donated funds to the Ricker Library of Architecture and Art at the University of Illinois. In 2006, after Professor Replinger's death, his wife and their three sons established the John Gordon Replinger Memorial Fund at the Ricker Library. The Replinger family maintains a website with pictures and paintings of some of the houses designed by John Replinger.

John Gordon Replinger died on March 27, 2006 at the age of 82.
